Wolf shifter, Aaric Tamang was kind of a "sad" figure initially. He'd met his Human mate many years ago when his family was suffering under a Witch's curse that if he married, his mate would die within a years time. Half Witch / Half Vampire, Draven the mate of Aaric's nephew Vail had figured out how the curse was broken and helped slay the vindictive Witch that made sure the killings were carried out.Still the Tamang family while happy had given up completely even on causal relationships. Aaric's sister and older brother, Abbott were determined to get him out of his doldrums. What better than a Halloween costume party a day one for the cubs and an evening one for the grownups, where the sexier the costume the better chance of hooking up.
Aaric found a scent that tickled his senses. For some crazy reason it reminded him of the mating scent, but after twenty five years there was no way his "mate" would suddenly unexpectedly show up. So when the man sought him out and informed him they were mates, Aaric was not kind. The devastated young man roared off on a motorcycle leaving Aaric feeling terrible. But he'd done the right thing....Right?
Crain Ponders and his older brother Richard were very close. Richard had even left their pack because Crain was constantly bullied. Unfortunately they were kidnapped and taken to be experimented on at the Oregon Training Facility. A facility that the enhanced Human, Raven and former scientist's soldier led Declan's & Kontra's shifters to end the practices he's finally realized were reprehensible.
Luckily the Wolf shifter brothers had only been there for a short time so hadn't suffered nearly as much as others. They decided once they were declared fit to travel that they would join up with Kontra's Menagerie of shifters. They had accompanied some of their new pack members to the adult Halloween party, where Crain scented his mate and got his heart broken when his "mate" denied him.
Under the advice of his siblings and Draven, Aaric realized he had been given something extra special, a second chance to have a mate. Now all he had to do was convince the man he'd made feel - humiliated, unworthy, and only good enough for pity - for a second chance.
Richard, Crain's super protective brother wanted the heartbreaker to leave his brother to alone!! It took some research, begging, wooing, and alpha interference to set things on the right path. The explanation was pretty surprising. If you're a fan of this intertwined set of series you get a chance to meet a new group of shifters - with guest appearances by former mated couples. The original Kontra's Menagerie are running out of unmated members.

I have been addicted to this series since I first discovered MM books, and have loved each one. Each couple we see is different, their conflicts are as unique as they are, and I find it just adds more elements to the world Charlie builds on a little more with each release. Some books are bursting with action, others heartbreak, and some with humour that has me stifling giggles at the most inappropriate times (like waiting in the doctors office lol). I love that variety, and I loved this book. Charlie, you really do make Kontra's growing tribe a family. )
It was sweet like all the other ones. Like always looking forward to the next one! I love the romance.
Spoilers Ahead
I love this series, and I mean love. but this one was just too creepy for me, and I've read some other stuff. Without going into to much detail, alpha male finds his mate 25 years ago but lets her go because his family is cursed. But ends up mating with her son? I just couldn't deal with that. I know I'll finish reading it in the long run, because all the stories are connected, but its already my least favorite in the 15+ series and that's not counting Wolves of Stone Ridge.
I do love Charlie Richards books - Wolves of Stone Ridge, Kontra's Menagerie, A Paranormals Love etc. And for the first time I struggled to finish the book because it was a bit of a yawn. There was no angst, no drama and no page turning urgency.
Aaric is Vail's uncle and was a victim of the family curse that would kill their mates-so most of them had loss or loneliness. Vail's story showed us the curse being broken.
Aaric met his mate in a gas station 70 years before but didn't engage with her because she would die if they mated. He felt the mate-pull but wanted to protect her and the pull disappeared 25 years ago but he didn't know why. Now at a Halloween party he smells mate again - but it isn't Melissa this time. The mate scent comes from a young wolf shifter-a MALE shifter. Huh, so how does that work? Aaric rejects Crain-but does offer a pity coupling to lessen the blow of rejection. He had never been with a male before but Crain was a cutie so why not? Crain is not impressed, he is hurt and leaves the party on a borrowed motorcycle. Did I mention he is in chaps and underwear only? Aaric realises he made a mistake offering a consolation tryst - he talks to his brother about what happened and they talk to an older wolf to work out what happened and why. The next morning he turns up to talk to Crain with an explanation of his behaviour and why he gets a second chance to mate now the curse has been broken.
But really, what I just gave you is it. That is the most exciting bit in the whole book. There is one date where they mate and that is it - all of it. Sigh. Really disappointing, not even a good time wasting read just because you want to curl up with a book.
I enjoy this series immensely! I have the list from Ms. Richards' website and like to read series books in the correct order. This book flows seamlessly along the order. It is worth the time it takes to read, which unfortunately, is not very long, AT ALL!!! However, this book is good.
As with all on going series book, you will find a few that you really enjoy, a few that are moderate and a few that aren't (in my opinion) up to scratch. Well, this one is a moderate book to me. It helps with the flow of the new characters, it is interesting to find out something new about mating. Because let's face it, there are only so many ways you can explain what goes on with mating and still make it interesting to read about into the 10th or 12th book. But the one good nugget about this book is that something new occurs with the mating thing. A new piece of information that hasn't been mentioned before.
So anyway, I definitely recommend reading this book as part of the series order. I don't think I would recommend reading this one as a stand alone book, but in tandem with all the rest.
This is why it received 3 stars from me instead of the usual 4 that I give Ms. Charlie's books.
